If you don’t know where you are going, there is one positive, and only one, that I can think of. You’ll never get lost. This does prompt me to ask another question. How will you know when you are there, wherever there may be? Before you can map out your journey (make the strategic plan), or start traveling (work the mission), you need to know where you are going (the vision). You need to start with the end in mind. What’s your dream? What will it look like when you arrive there? Will you be prepared for all the construction, detours and obstacles along the way? Will you be three steps ahead or always one step behind? Do you feel for every step you take you fall back six? These are all questions that require some thought, a lot of thought actually, and creativity. How much time do you spend a day, week, month or year thinking and working on your dream? Where do you go to get away and clear your head? Where is it you generate some of your best thoughts? Once you find your spot, I suggest you block out some time to work on your dreams there.
Well, for many of you who don’t know me, my name is Matt Caruso, and I am an MGI Associate. I’m writing this week’s and next week’s Great Ideas. Marty thought this would be a great way to introduce me. He is taking some ever important family time and I would be willing to bet it’s also a time for him to clear his head, recharge his batteries, generate some new ideas (creative time) and time to think and reflect. Not to mention the obvious, priceless family time. We all know how important that is!
While a vacation is a great way to get those gears turning, you need to find a way, if you don’t have one already, to discipline yourself to build blocks of thinking time into your schedule. We all know we don’t take near enough vacation time, let alone time enough for ourselves to think, however, this is the only way we will get to where we are going.
Take some time to think today….
